Scotland

Is a nation in northwest Europe and one of the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom. Edinburgh, the country's capital and second largest city.

Food and drink

Although the Deep fried Mars bar is jokingly said to exemplify the modern Scottish diet, Scottish cuisine offers such traditional dishes as haggis, Buccleuch Scotch beef, the Arbroath Smokie, salmon, venison, cranachan, bannock, Scotch Broth and shortbread.
Scotland is also known for its Scotch whisky and its distilleries, as well as for Scottish beer.

Philosophy

Scotland has an extremely strong tradition in philosophy (especially for such a small country). Duns Scotus was one of the premier Medieval scholastics. In the Scottish Enlightenment Edinburgh became the home for an astonishing amount of intellectual talent, including Francis Hutcheson, David Hume, and Adam Smith. However other cities also produced major thinkers at this time: Aberdeen for example, produced Thomas Reid. While the Scottish contribution in the 19th and 20th centuries has not been quite so impressive, there have been a steady stream of major philosophers, historians and thinkers.

Sport in Scotland

Sport plays a central role in Scottish culture. The temperate, oceanic climate has played a key part in the evolution of Sport in Scotland, with all-weather sports like football, rugby union and golf dominating the national sporting consciousness. However, many other sports are played in the country, with popularity varying between sports and between regions.
Scotland has its own sporting competitions and governing bodies, such as the Scottish Football League and the Scottish Cyclists' Union. The country has independent representation at many international sporting events, for example the Football World Cup and the Cricket World Cup, as well as the Commonwealth Games; although notably not the Olympic Games.
Scots, and Scottish emigrants, has made several key contributions to the history of sport, with important innovations and developments in: golf curling, football, Highland games (contributed to the evolution of modern athletics events), shinty (the predecessor of both ice hockey and bandy), cycling (Kirkpatrick Macmillan invented the pedal bicycle), and basketball.

Music

The Scottish music scene is a significant aspect of Scottish culture, with both traditional and modern influences. An example of a traditional Scottish instrument is the Great Highland Bagpipe, a wind instrument consisting of one or more musical pipes which are fed continuously by a reservoir of air in a bag.
Donovan Philips Leitch, is a Scottish singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Emerging from the British folk scene, he developed an eclectic and distinctive style that blended folk, jazz, pop, psychedelia, and world music.

England

ENGLAND

England; country and part of the island of Great Britain that includes, along with Wales, the main division of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The climate of England tempered by the seas surrounding the island, and especially for the warm Gulf Stream, is relatively mild for the latitude of the country, the same as Newfoundland in Canada; rarely recorded temperatures of heat or cold extreme.

England has a variety of soil types, ranging from thin and often acidic upland, as those present in the Peninos and heathland in the southwestern peninsula, the rich marl of East Anglia. In the past, England, as most of the island of Great Britain, was densely wooded, mostly by oaks and beech in the lowlands and pines and poplars in mountainous areas. Forests are at present only 7% of the total area.

The main constituent native mammals several species of deer, foxes, hares, ponies, otters, hedgehogs, red squirrels and badgers. The birds are the most common starling, the sparrow and blackbirds. England also gave shelter to hundreds of species of migratory summer and winter to be one of the major flyways. Migratory birds of summer are the most frequent swallow, vencejo and cuckoo. In winter, wetlands, lakes and reservoirs attract many birds waders, ducks and geese.

In England and Wales attendance at school is compulsory between 5 and 16 years. More than 90% of primary schools and secondary schools are funded in whole by public funds.

In the early 1990, 565 institutions providing education or full-time reduced the upper secondary level (called further education) for students who do not opt for university studies. There are 120 institutions of higher education, of which 90 are universities. With the exception of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, all higher education institutions that grant degrees in England was founded in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, many of them after the decade of 1970. In the early 1990 there were nearly one million students enrolled in courses at the university level.

This is your Life

This is your Life

Welcome to “This is your Life”. Our celebrity in this week’s article is the world-famous hero of the James Bond films. He was born in Ireland in 1953 but he has lived in California for over 15 years. He is married to Keely, and they have two sons. He is one of the most popular James bonds ever.
Pierce Brosnan is happy now but things used to be much different. When he was only a baby, his father left and his mother moved to London. He lived with his grandparents until he was six.
He left school when he was 16 and took various jobs to earn money, including washing dishes and driving a cab. For a while he was even a fire-eater in a circus. Though he looks cool now, at that time he had long hair and beard.
Brosnan has been an actor since the age of 21. He finally found success in 1980 with the TV series Remington Steele. He was 27 years old. In 1955 he starred as James Bond in Goldeneye. The film was an instant hit and took $350 million at the box office-the biggest Bond film ever. But at home, Brosnan is a different man. His favourite hobbies are fishing and painting.

FUTURE PLANS

FUTURE PLANS

When I think about the future I like to project myself in many different aspects. Those aspects are my personal life and my career. I will start by telling you about my personal life.

In five years I will have many wonderful learning experiences that will make me a better person. Some of those experiences can be hard or difficult, but in the end they will make me learn about life and about myself. I will continue to have very strong bonds with my family. I will still go to Monday dinners to see all my aunts, uncles, and cousins. Also if everything goes well, I will marry the man I love. I am not planning to have any kids by that time, but you never know.

About my carrier, if everything goes the way I plan, I will have a Master Degree in Germany as Foreign Language. I will be teaching German here at the University. I will be in charge of this area and work on the development and growth of German language and culture in Colombia. But this can also be different. If I enjoy my studies in Germany and everything goes well I will stay there and study a Doctorate in the same field. So in five years I will still be in Germany and not here. If this happens I will be along different things from what I have planned.

These are my plans for the future. I hope everything turns out right and in the way I expect, but if this doesn’t happen I know everything will be for the best.

Restaurants

Comparing restaurants

There are many restaurants available for people who work and study at La Sabana University. Two of the most important are el Mesón de La Sabana and El Humero, which are very well known for almost everybody in the University.

Although these two restaurants are good options if you want to give up food made at home or when you do not want to cook for yourself, there are several differences between them. El Mesón is located in the University while El Humero is located in the town centre. Besides, El Mesón opens from 8 to 5 while El Humero opens later and closes very late in the evening, perhaps at 12 pm. In regards to the food that they offer, El Mesón offers more varied food than el Humero since they have a bar salads which is made of fresh vegetables and fruit. In contrast, El Humero doesn’t have this service. Food in El Humero is not as varied as in El Mesón. Considering the prizes it is worth saying that el Mesón has better prizes for students than El Humero, which is a lot more expensive. Taking into account the place, it is clear that both restaurants are big, however, El Mesón is more comfortable than El Humero and we could say that El Humero is not as big as El Mesón since there are three different sections very well distributed. El Humero has more tables and chairs than El Mesón but it has a self service area, which makes it faster and easier.

People from La Sabana University have significant places to eat out. El meson and El Humero are two restaurants where people can have a good time eating good food.

Colombian culture with other cultures in the world

Compare Colombian culture with other
cultures in the world

In Colombia people are considered adults when they are 18. At this age they should be more responsible with themselves and their duties. In other cultures like in Europe, people at the age of 18 start living apart from their parents. They have to live in other cities because they travel to study far from home. Most of them don’t have to work yet, however they are very independent from parents.

In Colombia, children should start school at the age of 4 or 5, however, people with economical problems have to start school later because they can’t pay pre-school education. Mothers have to take care of their children until they are 5 or 6. In contrast, in other cultures children can start going to school at the age of 3 because their parents can pay for that.

In Colombia, most children (hijos) have to take care of their parents when they are very old because they can be with them and because they do not have the money to pay special houses for them. In Europe, many children do not take care of their parents because they live in other cities or countries. They should live with them because elderly people need love and care.

SECOND READING QUIZ READING

UNIVERSIDAD DE LA SABANA

SECOND READING QUIZ
READING (5.0 POINTS. 0.28 EACH)
Read the text below and answer the questions.

A story to remember!

The most romantic story I know is the way my parents met. They traveled from London to Newcastle by train. It was quite a long journey in those days, and after a while they started talking. They discovered that they had in lot in common, both of them came from Newcastle, but both lived in London and both went home to see their families for Christmas. But the biggest coincidence was that both of them were trained to be journalists on big London newspapers. Mom was working for The Times and Dad for the Daily Mirror.

Anyway, I don’t know exactly what else they talked about, but they obviously got on well, and somehow during the journey they fell in love and decided to get married. By the time they reached Newcastle, they were already engaged!
The wedding was about for weeks later, and amazingly they are still happily married even after thirty years!
Nowadays, my mom is about to get retired because she has worked for more than 30 years, she has written a lot of stories and articles about London. My father has also written a lot of documentaries about Europe and Latin America. My parents absolutely love traveling everywhere. Therefore, they have written about journeys too!
They have visited different countries in Latin America and have met wonderful people there. My father told me he is going to study a foreign language soon. Probably Spanish, he is going to write some articles in Spanish because this language makes him feel very excited and imaginative.
